Hull Truck Theatre set to host European Youth Theatre Festival

We’re proud to be hosting this year’s For/ With/ By European Festival of Youth Theatre (27 - 31 July). Starting in 2018, the festival began as a direct response to Brexit and quickly became a way for young theatre makers to connect, share and build fruitful creative relationships – no matter their location. Previous editions of FWB have taken place in Madrid and Sweden. This is a free event at Hull Truck Theatre, bringing together young people, aged 14-21 from Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire with youth groups and artists from across England and Europe. Throughout the week, there will be workshops and performances by both the groups and artists taking part in the festival, as well as home-grown talent. These include: Workshops: Creating a radio play – led by Hull Truck’s Youth Theatre Folklore Creation – led by Buxton Opera House Producing Theatre – led by Lyric Hammersmith DIY Murder Mystery – led by Hull Truck Theatre Productions: Search for the Second Star: Reimagined - An immersive adventure through Neverland by Open Theatre, West Midlands RÖSTER (Voices) – A performance about hiding who you are, the conflict with your inner self and standing up for yourself by Sweden’s Uppsala City Theatre’s Youth Ensemble. Other productions include: The Houses Are Sinking (And The Adult’s Don’t Care) by Josh Overton and performed by Hull Truck’s Young Company; Cross the Line by Azuka Oforka and a reading of NO BALLS by Lydia Marchant. Hull is a city that nurtures emerging creative talent and at Hull Truck Theatre, we work heavily with young people. This is FWB’s most youth-led festival yet, with young people being a big part of every element of it. They have co-designed the workshop programme, the performance structure, social events. The festival is about inspiring young people, about giving them power, making them feel heard and highlighting the importance of youth theatre in the UK’s broader cultural landscape. We can’t think of a better place than Hull Truck Theatre to host this year’s festival. Tom Saunders, Associate Director, at Hull Truck Theatre said: “We are beyond excited to be hosting For With By The European Festival of Youth Theatre in Hull. Here at Hull Truck Theatre, we do a lot of work with young people, most notably through our Youth Theatre Company and we’re always astonished and inspired by them. Hosting an entire festival comprised of young talent and being able to show just what Hull has to offer, has got to be a real career highlight for me. There will be some amazing productions, workshops and just as important, opportunities to meet others who share your love of theatre.
